ACADEMIC PROGRAMME
3rd International AUE Conference, Manchester 30 Aug 2025
PREAMBLE
This is the 3rd year running that we alumnus members of AIIMS Delhi (living in UK & Europe) will be holding the academic meetings annually as an International Conference. The 1st was held in London (Brunel University) to bring members from diverse professional fields together where we discussed a very broad theme (‘Global Issues in health & health care’) and identified wide disparities in healthcare provision leading to poor health.
Our 2nd Conference was held in Birmingham om ‘Inequities in global health and healthcare’ to which many US members contributed. However, we noticed most were uncomfortable in openly discussing issues relating to the theme of our Conference. Consequently, we began working actively with our Indian members to better understand their professional and personal views on how they were dealing with issues of inequities on the ground.
The Issues they identified were: a lack of universal coverage of health care leading to a lack of infrastructure leading to difficulties in accessing health care facilities like emergency services; poor citizen’s education leading to a lack of general understanding of health issues, more so in dispersed communities; communication barriers between the medical & our allied professions, the service providers, the service users; and a general lack of reliable health-related data maintained securely that are both independently managed, governed and continuously monitored for recording any changes.
During this 3rd International Conference, we intend to give our Indian alumni partners the centre-stage so they can showcase their work. We hope to share our mutual experiences and insights into all the difficulties we regularly face at work so together we can seek out joint solutions going forward.
We look forward to meeting you all in Manchester from Friday 29th onwards and hope to have a great time whilst working for better outcomes for all!
Wishes and regards,
Suresh

AIIMSONIANS of UK & Europe 3rd International Conference
Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Greater Manchester Medical School, Bolton

Bolton Townhall
President's Inauguration Speech
Good morning, everyone,
It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you all to the AUE Bolton 2025 event—a gathering that celebrates not only our shared commitment to education, innovation, and community, but also the vibrant spirit that defines our alumni and professional networks.
Today marks a special moment in our journey. As we unveil new ideas, showcase creative milestones, and build bridges across disciplines, we are also honoured to be joined by a truly distinguished guest whose life and work embody the very values we aspire to uphold.
Please join me in extending a heartfelt welcome to our chief guest, Professor Iqbal Singh OBE, Chancellor of the University of Greater Manchester School of Medicine, Bolton.
Professor Singh is a visionary leader, a pioneer in medical education, and a tireless advocate for inclusive healthcare. His contributions span decades of clinical excellence, policy innovation, and mentorship—transforming not only institutions but lives. As Chancellor, he has championed initiatives that bridge tradition with modernity, ensuring that future generations of medical professionals are both technically brilliant and deeply compassionate.
Beyond his academic and clinical achievements, Professor Singh’s recognition as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire speaks volumes of his national impact and unwavering dedication to public service.
We are truly privileged to have him with us today. His presence lends gravitas to our event and reminds us of the power of leadership rooted in purpose, humility, and vision.
As we embark on today’s program—with its blend of creativity, collaboration, and celebration—let us be inspired by Professor Singh’s journey and the possibilities that lie ahead when we come together as a community of changemakers.
This year’s event is curated to bring together Fellow AIIMSONIANS to celebrate memories, achievements, and camaraderie. It will be a moment to reconnect, reminisce, and reflect on our shared journey, while also welcoming and inspiring the new generation of AIIMSONIANS.
Each year, our journey together has grown in purpose and clarity. What began as a broad exploration of “Global Issues in Health” has matured into a focused and urgent dialogue on “Inequities in Global Health and Healthcare.” This year, we take a bold step forward: placing our Indian alumni partners at the heart of the conversation. Their lived experiences, professional insights, and innovative contributions will guide us as we seek collaborative solutions to the challenges we all face.
We gather not only to learn but to listen—to the voices that have long been underrepresented in global health discourse. From disparities in emergency access and infrastructure to the silent barriers of health literacy and data governance, the issues are complex, but our commitment is clear: to bridge gaps, build trust, and foster equity.
Our session last year on “Learning from Mistakes” was a timely reminder that innovation must be paired with introspection. The rapid development of vaccines and the bypassing of traditional clinical trials during global emergencies have taught us valuable lessons. Now, we must embed safeguards and ethical frameworks to ensure safety, efficacy, and trust. The same cautionary approach also applies to the AI industry.
Thank you, and let’s make this event unforgettable.
Professor Saroj Das
Chief Guest's Speech

AUE 2nd International Event 2024, Birmingham
President's Inauguration Speech
Good morning and welcome to the 2nd International Conference organized by the AIIMSONIANS of the UK and Europe (AUE).
Today, it is my great pleasure to stand before you at this beautiful botanical garden in Birmingham on a sunny day. This gathering represents a remarkable convergence of minds, a celebration of knowledge, and a testament to our shared commitment to advancing healthcare and addressing inequalities in global health.
Thanks to your unwavering support, we have overcome our disappointments with determination and resolve to achieve our goal.
To this end, we are now registered as a not-for-profit CIC. We have a website that we can be proud of, and we have successfully published our journal to be released with this meeting. All of you should have a copy to read and digest. We have a vibrant and inclusive executive body, and today, we are staging the 2nd AUE Conference in Birmingham – an indication of our emphatic success.
However, our job is not finished yet. Together, as we embark on this journey, let us reflect on the legacy of our esteemed institution, the AIIMS. The AIIMS has been a beacon of excellence, nurturing generations of healthcare professionals, researchers, and visionaries. Our alumni, affectionately known as AIIMSONIANS, have left an indelible mark on the global medical landscape for posterity.
Today, we gather not merely as participants but as torchbearers of innovation, compassion, and collaboration. We continue with our theme of the conference – “Global Health Inequalities” and healthcare beyond borders – resonates deeply. We are united by a common purpose: to improve the health and well-being of all humanity. Later on today, we will engage in spirited discussions on “Learning from Mistakes,” sharing innovations by groundbreaking research that might entice us to forge partnerships to explore novel approaches to patient care, disease prevention, and medical education. Harsh will preside over the session to explore the mysteries in the history of AIIMS, supported by Suresh. And to celebrate the platinum jubilee of PKD’s appointment to AIIMS, like the previous year, we have identified the recipient for the PKD Award for this year. Finally, we have a workshop for the younger AIIMSONIANS regarding mentorship, how to become an entrepreneur, and remodeling health services for India.
Our sessions will span diverse topics – precision medicine, telehealth, AI, genomics, and more. I encourage you not to miss the session on AI, as our future almost certainly will be dictated by the digital revolution.
Let us recognize the tireless efforts of our organizing committee and volunteers who have made this event possible. Their dedication exemplifies the spirit of service that defines AIIMSONIANS worldwide. My unwavering appreciation goes to Suresh for being a fluent and prolific thinker and writer, to Tarun – a fantastic entertainer and organizer, and to Harsh for giving attention to details: putting dots on the “i” and putting the cross on the “t”.
As we begin this conference, let us reaffirm our commitment to the highest standards of medical practice, ethics and empathy. Let us embrace curiosity, challenge dogmas, and champion evidence-based medicine. Let us foster an environment where ideas flourish and where mentorship thrives.
In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each one of you. May this conference be a catalyst for transformative change – a symphony of ideas that reverberate across borders, transcending language, culture, and discipline.
Thank you and let us embark on this remarkable journey together.
There are some ground rules and information that Tarun will share and Suresh will talk about the rules of the academic sessions. Please adhere to these rules.

Even ignoring the financial costs, humanitarian emergencies alone from heatwaves, wildfires, floods, tropical storms and hurricanes alone rising in astronomical scale, frequency and intensity with a projected additional 250 000 deaths per year worldwide by mid-century leading to over 9 million additional deaths per year by 2200. Pollution causes diseases and premature deaths in more than 16% compared to all global deaths in 2015. Globally, health systems are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, but in turn also contribute to this effect (up to 5% of the global total of the greenhouse emissions).
He questions the very basis of human efforts for sustainability during this current triple crisis facing nature but doesn’t lose heart, finding unique opportunities for AIIMSONAINS to contribute positively in making these changes happen. This includes guiding health sector professionals in addressing climate-related health risks through collaboration; strengthening health system functions for climate resilience and policies for low carbon health approaches; supporting development of specific interventions for emissions reduction and helping define roles and responsibilities for health decision-makers in climate resilience, etc.
In his view, AIIMSONIANS do have an important role not only as role models but also in directing the benefits for change for extending far beyond the realms of practising health care.

Session on Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Risks & Rewards of AI in Health versus Healthcare
Chairman: Saroj Das
During the Second World War, Alan Turing cracked the Enigma code. He became the father of modern computer science, laid the central concept of modern computers, and devised the automatic computing machine, which was the first digital computer with stored programs.
In 1985-86, I was involved in a research project “Computer Aided Diagnosis of Acute Abdominal Pain.” Professor F. T. de Dombal from Leeds was the chief investigator in this project. At that time, computers, although a miraculous invention, were very slow with an inefficient CPU. Since then, the digital revolution has overtaken every aspect of our life. Today, the possibilities with AI are infinite. The last remaining point of transformation is the final trigger.
Despite significant progress in the automation of warfare and vehicles, humans, at least for the foreseeable future, will continue to hold control. It is not far off before the machines can acquire complete control.
In this session, Ajay Bakshi will talk about natural language processing: LLM, SLM that ChatGPT, Gemini, and others use to predict and generate AI. Whereas Sanjaya Khanal will talk about the clinical application of AI today.
Technical Perspectives
AJAY BAKSHI, Delhi & Bangalore
Ajay created his own company for AI solutions starting from his original field of Neurosurgery and now extensively diversified across other fields of medicine and health care.
The integration of AI in health and healthcare presents substantial opportunities and challenges. From a technical viewpoint, AI promises enhanced diagnostic accuracy, personalized treatment plans, and improved patient outcomes through predictive analytics and machine learning. However, significant risks persist, including data privacy concerns, algorithmic biases, and the need for robust validation frameworks. This presentation will delve into the critical balance between leveraging AI for innovative solutions and ensuring ethical, secure, and reliable implementation in clinical settings.
Clinician's Perspectives
SANJAYA KHANAL, Lancaster CA, USA
Sanjay Khanal is an innovative Cardiac surgeon and considers AI's advent in health and healthcare as offering significant transformative change for clinical practice.
Sanjay gives the clinician's perspective of AI in enhancing diagnostic precision, streamlining administrative tasks, and fostering personalized patient care. He also underlines potential challenges such as the potential erosion of the doctor-patient relationship due to vicarious over-reliance on technology, and the various ethical dilemmas regarding usage patients’ personal data. His presentation will also explore the practical implications of AI in day-to-day medical practice, emphasizing the need for careful integration for maximizing benefits across the stream while mitigating risks.

AUE - VISION
IMPORTANT, REQUIRES RESPONSE TO BOD, AUE
Dear Friends,
As 2024 draws to a close, the memories of the Birmingham AUE event have become a cherished part of our past. We now look forward to the festive season and the new year with hope and aspiration.
We have observed the significant activities within our AUE WhatsApp group and am delighted to see how AIIMSONIANS have consistently supported each other. This camaraderie has been a source of strength and reassurance for all of us, including our beloved elders and youngsters, no matter where they are in the world.
To further enhance accessibility to the vast resources within our group, we propose improving our website's functionality. We plan to introduce a dedicated "members only" platform for AIIMSONIANS. This platform will feature a comprehensive database of members' biodata, expertise in medicine and surgery, academic activities, and research. Additionally, it will allow members to share other talents, such as mentoring.
This initiative aims to simplify access and provide significant benefits to all members. The new section will be added to the website menu under "members only," protected by login credentials, allowing members to update their details as needed.
We welcome any suggestions to further improve this facility.
